TARS & Friends is a Membership Program of TARS Awareness Texas.

TARS & Friends was created to ensure that no one living with a disability ever feels alone. While TARS began with a focus on Thrombocytopenia-Absent Radius (TAR) Syndrome, we recognize that families across the disability community share many of the same challenges, hopes, and victories. The “Friends” in our name reflects our commitment to inclusion — embracing individuals of all ages and abilities, along with the families, caregivers, medical professionals, and supporters who walk beside them. Together, we are a compassionate community built on understanding, advocacy, and connection, working to uplift and empower every voice and every story.

Why the Elephant Is Our Mascot

The elephant is our mascot because elephants are never alone.  Elephants live in groups called tribes, and everyone in the tribe looks out for one another. The big elephants protect the little ones, the older elephants help guide the group, and when someone needs help, the whole tribe steps in.  That’s what TARS & Friends is all about.  The elephant reminds us that being strong doesn’t mean doing everything by yourself. It means having friends, family, and helpers who walk beside you and make sure you are safe and supported.

The lion cub and bear cub represent the many other people affected by all the different disabilities in this world as well as all the friends — kids, families, neighbors, and supporters — who stand together with TARS. Each one brings something special: courage, kindness, and love.

Together, they remind us that you belong, you are protected and you are never alone!  At TARS & Friends, we believe we are stronger together.

Your charitable membership donation sustains the overall mission of TARS Awareness Texas in the areas of Medical Research, Education, Legislation, Outreach, and Support.

💙 TARS Warrior of the Day

One of the most meaningful things we do each year is highlight the incredible individuals and families who make up our community.

During TARS Awareness Month, we share a new story each day—not just to raise awareness, but to remind the world that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, a journey, and so much strength.

These stories are filled with joy, challenges, growth, and resilience. They are a reflection of what it truly means to be part of this community.

For me, this is what TARS & Friends is all about—making sure no one feels alone, and that every story has a place to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

💙 I invite you to take a moment to meet our warriors.

Moments that Matter

These aren’t just events—they’re moments of connection, laughter, and belonging. 💙
