Why Awareness Must Be Ongoing

March often feels like preparation.

Preparation for awareness campaigns. Preparation for events. Preparation for conversations that need to happen.

But this month has reminded me of something important: awareness is not seasonal.

It’s not something we turn on in April and turn off in May. It’s not a social media trend or a single campaign. Awareness, at its core, is about visibility that leads to understanding — and understanding that leads to change.

Over the past month, I’ve reflected on what awareness truly means for TARS Awareness Texas.

Awareness means families don’t have to explain themselves over and over again. It means educators, medical professionals, and communities recognize needs more quickly. It means children grow up seeing representation instead of invisibility.

But awareness alone is not enough.

Education must follow awareness. Action must follow education. And consistency must follow action.

As an organization, we are committed to building awareness that is sustainable — awareness rooted in accurate information, inclusive spaces, and real-life impact. That kind of awareness requires patience. It requires collaboration. It requires leadership that thinks long term.

This month has been about strengthening that foundation.

We’ve continued developing resources that help families feel informed instead of overwhelmed. We’ve evaluated how we communicate so that our message is clear, responsible, and accessible. We’ve asked ourselves not just “Are people hearing us?” but “Are they understanding us?”

Because awareness without understanding can still leave families feeling unseen.

As we approach the months ahead, our commitment remains steady: to ensure that awareness leads to empowerment, and empowerment leads to belonging.

TARS Awareness Texas was never built for visibility alone. It was built so families would feel supported, included, and understood — not just during awareness campaigns, but every single day.

That is the work we continue to build.

Thank you for being part of a community that believes awareness is not a moment — it’s a movement.

💙 Rare but Strong— Marla
